  • Draw the fashion figure in proper proportion and to practice accurate and effective garment design detail.
  • Execute basic drawing fundamentals, study various media, and attempt to create an individual style of sketching.
  • Use various media and techniques to render fabric textures and prints and to sketch garments as they would drape on the human form.

  • Practice professional construction skills, perform detail and finishing techniques by hand and machine sewing, and research and demonstrate construction knowledge and ability.
  • Apply the fundamentals of draping techniques to various styles and practice skills in complex draping projects.

  • Explore the evolution of fashion through the ages and set goals for their futures in the fashion industry.
  • Solve specific problems oriented to a work situation and develop collections of wearable clothing.
  • Develop work sketches and flats used for specification charts called spec sheets.
  • Understand the basics of visual display and the importance of coordinating fashion for promotion.
  • Structure and write an article for a fashion journal.
  • Design costumes for a variety of historical plays and production styles.
  • Explore the various specialty markets such as men's, women's plus size and children's wear.
  • Analyze fashion trends and apply them to forecasting and planning by exploring trends in lifestyles, business and fashion.
  • Understand the promotion of fashion events such as fashion shows, trunk shows and trade shows.
  • Design and develop a fashion product through research, engineer production of garments, establish a consumer product relationship, relate the product to workroom procedures, and develop presentation boards for the product.
  • Set and meet production/merchandise deadlines.
  • Understand the principles of promotion and how it contributes to the marketing process.
  • Understand the essentials of small business start-up and management.
  • Understand basic drafting techniques with an emphasis on precision pattern making and the development of basic block patterns.
  • Research the technical properties of a number of textiles to determine their suitability for clothing.
  • Construct a complete pattern for a basic coat, jacket and pants.
  • Experiment with more demanding silhouettes in order to engineer their creations through flat pattern method of design.
  • Transform knowledge of flat pattern design methods into computer aided design (CAD) techniques.
  • Design final signature collections using appropriate sketching techniques. Final graduate portfolios will be presented for review.
  • Understand the design of printed textile designs as well as patterns for knits, wovens and other textile fabrications.
